Got my MacBook Pro Friday.
For the record, I am now operating on the Core Duo 2.0Ghz, 2Gb RAM, and the 7200 RPM 100Gb HDD.
It’s Hot.
No, like freakin’ hot. Somehow, it’s hotter than my 15” G4 was. In fact, my major complaints with it thus far are all seemingly related to power or heat issues:
– The now infamous power-supply ‘whine’ is present as a switching hiss. – The perhaps more infamous and ENORMOUS power adapter. It may actually be bigger than the Mac Mini’s. – The rear panel has a sculpted edge (to allow the heat out?), which in practice just means a rather sharp crease to dig into your bare (and now burnt!) legs. All that said, it’s the sexiest laptop ever. Thinner than Kate Moss and brighter than Ken Jennings. The differences with my G4 are mainly subtle, but meaningful to me. The Core Duo is ridiculous- I can barely crack 20% utilization running the daily stuff I bang around in. I labored away under the old, lower rez LCD, and this new one is like going on vacation! Even though it’s only (point-one) inches thinner, it’s still noticeable, and the little perqs like the iSight and the magnetic power connector are absolutely charming touches. Even the Photo Booth application is entertaining.
So, for the next few weeks I’ll be monitoring my battery life (it must account for half of the 5.5 lbs of system weight) and trying to shed my legacy PowerPC applications in favor of the speedy Universal Binaries.
Which is just as well. I really should have my digital footprint ironed out before my free Mac Mini arrives…
